The Axarquia region in southern Spain Print E-mail
Holiday focus Spain

"Andalucia in the South of Spain is one of the best walking areas in Europe – it simply cannot be rivalled for variety of scenery, climate, spectacular mountains, history, culture and some of the most interesting flora and fauna to be found anywhere in the world." And the Axarquia region is ideal base for a walking holiday with Walk Andalucia (www.walk-andalucia.com)

After a short drive east of Malaga you will be in the Axarquia region, one of Spain’s wild places preserved from the clutches of property developers, and in the shadow of the impressive peaks of the Sierras of Tejeda and Almijara. The Axarquia has a natural environment of great richness and variety – splendid diversity of wetland zones, mountain ranges and bird migration routes. It is a region of historic white villages with a distinctive Arabic influence scattered amongst dramatic hills and mountains, and where grape vines, mango trees and kiwi fruits thrive alongside ancient olive and almond groves. Many of these white villages have been preserved so that today they can still be appreciated in their typical and original condition.

You can find out more about renting the property by contacting Pippa Sharman at Finca Al-Manzil

"I fell in love with this part of Extremadura five years ago, while staying at Finca Al-Manzil. The steep boulder-strewn slopes and peaks, the trees growing out of the rocks everywhere - mainly cork and holme oak, the horses and cattle, the vultures and eagles, all the wild-life –  the peace and quiet, the old-fashioned courtesy of the locals, the last vestiges of an old order – all called out to my sensibilities.

Join Birdwatch Alpujarras for tours and excursions in the beautiful southern foothills of the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada mountains. The Alpujarras offer some of Spain's most spectacular birdlife. Based in the village of Lanjaron, they can show you the rich variety of birding highlights the region has available.

Who?
Ian Williams is the "heart and soul" of Birdwatch Alpujarras. His enthusiasm for our feathered friends knows no bounds. He has vast experience of birdwatching throughout Europe, but especially in the Alpujarras, where he now lives, and in his native UK.  Kiersten Rowland is resident in the Alpujarras and looks after the website and administration functions. She also helps support Ian on birdwatching tours throughout the region. Contact her if you have relevant and related information you wish to be included on the site. Both are passionate about the area and it's birdlife.

The Birds
Resident raptors include Golden and Bonelli's Eagles and these are joined by large numbers of Booted and Short Toed Eagles over the breeding season. All three of southern Spain's "exotic" species, namely, Hoopoe, Rollers and Bee-Eaters, breed locally and are seen regularly. Golden orioles nest in and around the village. Chats and Thrushes include the Northen, Black and Black Eared Wheatear. Black Redstart and Blue Rock thrushes. Other seasonal visitors of note include Great Grey and Woodchat Shrikes, with Subalpine Warblers in the spring. Local woodland brings frequent sightings of Crossbills and Crested Tits. Firecrests are another local speciality.
The Tours
They offer guided tours in 4x4 transport in small groups to ensure we get the best the region can provide. Recent days have brought great sightings of Eagle Owl, Goshawk and Iberian Yellow Wagtails. There is always something fantastic to see!

You will find much more information about the tours and birdlife on the interactive website at www.birdwatchalpujarras.com

Within the same day birdwatchers can experience Atlantic, Mediterranean and Alpine influenced habitats; starkly different landscapes with an unparalleled diversity of bird life. Should this not be enough, Navarre’s position at the western extreme of the Pyrenees, where the mountains end abruptly at the shores of the Atlantic, means that it also lies strategically on the Atlantic migratory route.
